About the NYS 4-H Resource Directory

What is the NYS 4-H Resource Directory?
The NYS 4-H Resource Directory is an on-line database, which lists hundreds of educational curriculum for 4-H project work. It was designed to help educators, club leaders and youth locate high quality curriculum. The resources in the directory cover a variety of subjects, and include lesson plans and other printed material, videos, posters, kits, and instructional web sites. The educational material is searchable by title, content, grade level, subject, price, source, and media type. Resources can be easily ordered on-line or through the supplier contact information provided.
What is 4-H?
4-H is the youth development program of Cornell Cooperative Extension, linking the resources of Cornell University to young people. Nationally-as well as in New York State-4-H Youth Development creates educational opportunities for young people to develop skills, practical knowledge, and wisdom through observing, doing, and reflecting on experiences. "Learning by doing" is a model that has been active and successful for 100 years. Supportive environments encourage diverse youth and adults to reach their fullest potential as capable, competent, and caring citizens.
What types of activities do 4-Hers do?
Young people are involved in 4-H through 4-H clubs, school enrichment activities, after-school programs, camps, and events. Although most young people involved in 4-H are usually involved in public presentations, fair demonstrations and other events, the focus of the 4-H Youth Development program is the young person, not the activity. The activity, however, is the hook to get young people involved and interested. As such, curriculum has been created for most topics of interest and continues to be developed.
Why is it important to use recommended 4-H Curriculum?
Although there are many great youth activities available, the recommended 4-H curriculum listed on this website have been reviewed by faculty and educators for accurate information, usable style and age appropriateness.
What is a 4-H project?
A project involves a youth for six or more hours of planned learning activities/experiences. Projects engage youth in the use of their heads and hands in ways that result in enhanced competencies, open hearts and better health.
4-H projects give youth opportunities to:
  • gain new knowledge and develop the critical thinking skills that lead to independence of thought and action;
  • experience a sense of belonging through cooperative learning activities;
  • develop a spirit of generosity by sharing knowledge and using skills to help others;
  • achieve a feeling of mastery as the cumulative result of project work. (See pages 1-2 and 1-3)
